1896-1975Nacido en Brookline, Massachusetts, William A Well man deja los estudios secundarios para jugar como profesional en un equipo de hockey sobre hielo. Con posterioridad, lo encontramos alistado en la Legion Extranjera Fran cesa y, durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, como as de la aviacion. Despues de un encuentro accidental con Douglas Fairbanks entra en el mundo del cine. Pronto, en 1923, empieza a dirigir, sobre todo westerns, hasta que su pelicula Alas (Wings, 1927), en la que tiene ocasion de plasmar, casi de modo autobiografico, sus conocimientos del universo de la aviacion, le proporciona un enorme exito y, por anadidura, el primer Oscar a la Mejor Pelicula.En los anos treinta es el responsable de filmes violentos y controvertidos como The Public Enemy (1931). Wellman es uno de los ilustres pioneros de Hollywood, y de nuevo, ese personaje es alguien importante en el mundo del western. 1912-1997Cineasta excesivo, con el cine en la sangre, Samuel Fuller es uno de los grandes, y semidesconocidos hoy, realizadores norteamericanos. Nacido en Worcester, Massachusetts, periodista de formacion, es novelista cronologicamente antes que cineasta, lo que le facilita la entrada en el mundo del cine como guionista, a mediados de los anos 30. No sera hasta 1949 cuando debutaria en la direccion con Balas vengadoras. Casi desde su primer filme, parece dispuesto a poner en practica el concepto del cine que haria explicito en su pequena intervencion en la pelicula de Jean-Luc Godard Pierrot, el loco (Pierrot le fou, 1965): «Una pelicula es como una batalla, amor, odio, accion, violencia, muerte; en una palabra, emocion ». No es de extranar, pues, que cada una de sus peliculas belicas sea una obra maestra, desde Casco de acero (The Steel Helmet, 1950), pasando por Invasion en Birmania (Merrill’s Marauders, 1962), hasta Uno rojo: division de choque (The Big Red One, 1979). 1894-1977Tay Garnett es un interesantisimo realizador del que siempre recordaremos su El cartero siempre llama dos veces (The Postman Always Rings Twice, 1946). Se dice que mantuvo siempre un acusado instinto nomada que lo mantenia en movimiento constante. Alistado en el servicio aereo de la marina, sufrio un accidente de aviacion en San Diego mientras realizaba practicas de instructor de vuelo, que le dejo como secuela una patente cojera. De vuelta a la vida civil, entro en el mundo del cine como creador de gags y guionista de fragmentos comicos para Mack Sennett y Hal Roach. Aunque como guionista es mas un hombre del mudo que del sonoro, como director ocurre lo contrario: la mayor parte de su obra la realiza en los ultimos anos 30, los 40 y los primeros 50, conformando una filmografia nada espectacular pero solida. No fue el suyo el mundo del western, que solo abordo tardiamente y para la television. En 1924 se estrena como realizador, tarea en la que persiste hasta 1967. Entre 1933 y 1935 es el director casi unico de la modesta productora Powerty Row. En 1935 pasa a Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer, donde permanecera hasta 1962. Dirige, en los mas de cuarenta anos de profesion, cerca de 200 peliculas, de las que unas 120 son sonoras. Aborda todos los generos, si bien se encuentra mas comodo dentro de la accion y la aventura, donde obtiene sus mayores reconocimientos, como en Ivanhoe (1953) y en Los caballeros del rey Arturo (Knights of the Round Table, 1954), por ejemplo, ademas de tres entregas del Tarzan protagonizado por Johnny Weissmuller. Entre otras muchas cosas, es uno de los pioneros en el uso de formatos anchos. Su actividad en el western, sin embargo, es reducida; se limita a un punado de peliculas a comienzos del sonoro, incluido un serial, a cuatro filmes en los anos 40 protagonizados por Wallace Beery, y a alguna que otra esporadica aparicion en el genero, al que no contribuye especialmente, ni en cantidad ni en calidad.Border Romance. 1929. 66 minutos. En 1928 empieza a dirigir cortometrajes para RKO y Colum bia, entre otras, y peliculas de serie B, hasta que, en 1952, decide dedicarse, durante cierto tiempo, a la television. 1900-1984Neoyorquino; como otros muchos, pasa de montador, su oficio inicial dentro del mundo del cine, a di rector, asociado basicamente a 20th Century-Fox, para la que hizo la mayor parte de su obra. Debuta en 1937 con Love on a Budget. Realiza westerns y peliculas de misterio y aventuras a un ritmo endiablado que en sus mejores momentos llega a alcanzar los cinco filmes por ano, para Fox, y despues pa ra RKO y Monogram. 1919-1989Nacido en Berlin, en 1938 emigra a los Estados Unidos con su familia. Tuvo al principio algunas dificultades para hacerse un sitio en el mundo del cine, en el que empezo como ayudante de direccion en Monogram. Ya en Fox ascendio a la categoria de productor asociado y consigue, en 1955, realizar su primera pelicula, Un beso antes de morir (A Kiss Before Dying), que es distribuida por United Artists. Se mueve, por lo general, con presupuestos ajustados, pero cuando no lo hace tampoco por ello se ven favorecidos sus filmes. Dirige un buen punado de episodios de series de television, y tambien algun largometraje en Alemania. Es hijo del tambien realizador Richard Oswald.
